چکیده

We have performed an analysis and interpretation of the X-ray light curve of the accreting neutron star Her X-1 obtained with the ASM RXTE over the period 1996 February to 2004 September. The averaged X-ray light curves are constructed by means of adding up light curves corresponding to different 35 day cycles. A numerical model is introduced to explain the properties of the averaged light curves. We argue that a change of the tilt of the accretion disk over the 35 d period is necessary to account for the observed features and show that our numerical model can explain such a behavior of the disk and reproduce the details of the light curve.

Pulse - Phase Spectroscopy of Smc X - 1 with Chandra and Xmm - Newton : Reprocessing by a Precessing Disk ?

We present pulse-phase X-ray spectroscopy of the high-mass X-ray pulsar SMC X-1 from five different epochs, using Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S and XMM-Newton EPIC-pn data. The X-ray spectrum consistently shows two distinct components, a hard power law and a soft blackbody with kT BB ∼ 0.18 keV. For all five epochs the hard component shows a simple double-peaked pulse shape, and also a varia...

The Origin of Warped, Precessing Accretion Disks in X-Ray Binaries

The radiation-driven warping instability discovered by Pringle holds considerable promise as the mechanism responsible for producing warped, precessing accretion disks in X-ray binaries. This instability is an inherently global mode of the disk, thereby avoiding the difficulties with earlier models for the precession. Here we follow up earlier work to study the linear behavior of the instabilit...

On the Enigmatic X-ray Source V1408 Aql (=4u 1957+11)

Models for the characteristically soft X-ray spectrum of the compact X-ray source V1408 Aql (=4U1957+11) have ranged from optically thick Comptonization to multicolor accretion disk models. We critically examine the X-ray spectrum of V1408 Aql via archival Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) data, archival Röntgensatellit (ROSAT) data, and recent Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer...

Millihertz Optical/uv Oscillations in 4u 1626–67: Evidence for a Warped Accretion Disk1

We have detected large-amplitude 0.3–1.2 mHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) from the low-mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1626–67/KZ TrA, using ultraviolet photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope and groundbased optical photometry. These 1 mHz QPOs, which have coherence (ν/∆ν) ≈ 8, are entirely distinct from the 130 mHz pulsar spin frequency, a previously known 48 mHz QPO, and the 42 min bina...

The 35-Day Evolution of the Hercules X-1 Pulse Profile: Evidence For A Resolved Inner Disk Occultation of the Neutron Star

Ginga and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations have allowed an unprecedented view of the recurrent systematic pulse shape changes associated with the 35-day cycle of Hercules X-1, a phenomenon currently unique among the known accretion-powered pulsars. We present observations of the pulse shape evolution. An explanation for the pulse evolution in terms of a freely precessing neutron ...
